The Bishop of the Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, has called on educators to move away from traditional “memorization” learning methods.

Bishop Wanok shared these thoughts on November 3, 2024, during a dedication prayer for 185 Primary 7 candidates at St. Gracious Boarding Primary School in Barapwo Ward, Lira City West Division.

In a statement delivered by judicial vicar, Rev. Fr. Monsignor Francis Omara, the Bishop urged school owners and teachers to focus on providing an education that fosters the growth and development of children instead of just encouraging memorization.

Monsignor Omara highlighted that the Bishop pointed out that assigning busywork solely for the purpose of passing exams does not help students develop critical thinking skills. Fr. Omara also encouraged parents to start guiding their children from a young age about their future aspirations.

Additionally, Rev. Fr. Ponsiano Okalo, the Vicar for the Clergy, raised concerns that government and various organizations are primarily supporting the education of young girls while neglecting boys. He urged both parents and the government to ensure equal educational opportunities for both genders, warning that focusing only on girls' education could create future family issues.

On another note, the principal of St. Gracious Schools, Elem Leo, expressed confidence that all 185 candidates will achieve first-grade results in their upcoming Primary Leaving Examinations. Elem encouraged parents to help their children engage in online studies during the break to broaden their knowledge and prepare for their future endeavors.
