Computerized Talking Pen Unveiled To Lira City’s Versity Junior Primary School

Education experts in Lira City have introduced a groundbreaking computerized talking pen aimed at revolutionizing traditional learning methods for children under eight years old.

This initiative was presented by Dr. Alfred Obia and Dr. Lawrence Okello, both educators and co-founders of Versity Junior School in Lela Apeta Cell, Boke Ward, Lira City East Division, during a ceremony dedicated to the school's 35 candidates for the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE).

Dr. Obia, who is also a lecturer at Gulu University, noted that the launch of this talking pen signifies a major leap forward in educational practices within Lira City. The device features a talking book that supports the enhancement of reading and writing skills, particularly for students facing challenges with handwriting and literacy. He explained that the impetus for this innovation arose from the unsatisfactory performance of numerous Primary Seven candidates in the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) assessments, which is largely linked to insufficient handwriting and reading skills.

Dr. Obia stressed that this initiative is designed to improve the handwriting and reading capabilities of students in lower primary grades, specifically from Primary One to three, ensuring they acquire the essential skills needed as they advance to upper primary levels.

Concurrently, Dr. Lawrence Okello, another co-founder of the school and currently leading the International Rescue Committee in Nigeria, reaffirmed their dedication to promoting educational reform in the Lango sub-region. He articulated their goal of establishing high educational standards starting at the primary level, acknowledging the critical role of early education.

Additionally, Rev. Fr. Norbert Otim, a priest of the Gulu Archdiocese, reiterated that poor handwriting contributes to the failure of candidates, alongside the anxiety experienced during examinations.
