About Radio Wa

Radio Wa is registered to broadcast by the Uganda Broadcasting Council. It is under the jurisdiction of Lira Diocese Media Limited and it is supervised by a Board of Directors appointed by the Bishop of Lira Diocese. It was created under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Lira, actually represented by its head, Bishop Joseph Franzelli MCCJ.

Bishop Joseph Franzelli MCCJ was born in Roccafranca, Brescia Diocese (Northern Italy) on 9th April 1942. He entered the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (MCCJ), made his first profession in the Institute in 1963 and his final vows as religious on 9th September 1966. He received the priestly ordination on 11th March 1967. Afterwards he came to Uganda and taught at the Pastoral Institute of Kitgum (1972-73) and in Lacor Seminary, Gulu (1974-75). From 1975 to 1982 he was the Rector of Kitgum Pastoral Institute. He then worked in Patongo, where he was Parish Priest up to 1987. Back to Italy, he served seven years as Master of Postulants in Florence and two years as Vice-Provincial in Bologna. From 1996 he directed the Comboni Year of Ongoing Formation, commuting between Mexico and South Africa, and helping in various administrative tasks in Rome until he was elected as the third Bishop of Lira. He was consecrated in Lira on 9th July 2005.

Bishop Franzelli is presently the Chairman of the Social Communication Commission of the Ugandan Bishops Conference and Vice-Chairman of the Social Services and Development Commission.

Board of Directors

In April 2021, the management of Lira Diocese Media Limited from which Radio Wa depend and guided by Rt Rev Santus Lino Wanok the Bishop of Lira Diocese appointed Charles Dickens Elem as the new Managing Director of Radio Wa 89.8 Fm.

Mr. Elem has been working as the Managing Director of Radio North for 21 years mainly in Lira with academic back ground in Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication & Bachelor of Arts and Business Administration.

He is also representing all the media houses in Northern Uganda in their association of the Rural Broadcaster Association of Uganda

Charles Dicken Elem is the first local Director of Radio after replacing Ms Magdalene Kasuku who is a Kenyan, Alberto Eisman Torres a Spanish and Fr John a Scotish who was the first director of Radio Wa and founder

Presently Radio Wa is managed by the Director with the assistance of the following Heads of Department
