The Fisheries Protection Unit has burnt 500 undersized and unlicensed boats in Amolatar District as part of the wider operation, being conducted by the UPDF soldiers against illegal fishing activities on Lake Kyoga which has led to depletion of fish.

The operation that started early this week has seen several illegal nets, undersized boats and smaller sized fish recovered and subsequently destroyed.

The boats were recovered from Namasale, Bangladesh among other landing sites during the on-going operation launched early this week.

Lt. Col. Moses Nuwagaba, the Commander of UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit has since Monday, been conducting door to door search of homes, looking for undersized nets and fish.

Col. Nuwagaba notes that the operation shall last for a period of three months until all the fishermen and boats are registered.

The army has also ordered for the closure of all satellite and illegal landing sites in the area.
